The Hi-Lo fishing rig, also known as the double dropper loop rig, is a popular choice among anglers for its adaptability and ability to target a variety of fish species. Its design consists of a main line with two leader lines or loops branching off, each ending in a hook.

Components of the Hi-Lo Rig:

  1. Main Line: The primary line of the rig, typically made of monofilament or fluorocarbon, serves as the backbone that connects everything together.
  2. Dropper Loops: These are the branching lines that extend from the main line. They are created by forming loops and securing them at intervals along the main line. These loops provide attachment points for the leader lines. Although I find leader lines optional and most often create loops from the main line that extend 2-3 inches.
  3. Leader Lines: (Optional) These are the lines that extend from the dropper loops to the hooks. Leader lines are usually shorter than the main line and can be adjusted based on the fishing conditions, target species and depth of the water.
  4. Hooks: The Hi-Lo rig features two hooks, each attached to a leader line or directly to the dropper loops. The choice of hooks depends on the type of bait used and the species you're targeting. Some states require the use of circle hooks when targeting specific species like striped bass in the state of New Jersey. Make sure to check your local state fishing regulations.

Advantages of the Hi-Lo Rig:

  1. Versatility: The Hi-Lo rig is highly versatile and can be used for various fishing scenarios, from bottom fishing to surf fishing. Adjust the height of where you place your loops according to the depth of the water body where you are fishing to target bottom feeding fish. The placement of the weight on the bottom of the rig gives the advantage of keeping the bait in place. You can utilize different style weight depending on the conditions and the type of water body. Utilizing pyramid weight in the surf keeps the bait firmly placed in the sand. For fishing piers, you can use bullet style weight to prevent snags and make it easier to slide the weight on top of rocks or other obstacles.
  2. Multi-Species Targeting: With two hooks at different depths, the Hi-Lo rig allows you to target different species simultaneously. This increases your chances of a successful catch. Species like flounder are bottom dwellers but will come up the water column to catch prey.
  3. Bait Presentation: The rig provides an excellent presentation of bait, making it enticing to a wide range of fish. Here in the north east of the United States, you can often catch flounder, striped bass, bluefish on the hi-lo rig using small bunker chunks, salted clams, Ballyhoo chunks , squid or live minnows.

Setting Up the Hi-Lo Rig:

  1. Choose the Right Line: Select a main line and leader lines based on the fishing conditions and target species. Monofilament Line is most commonly used for its strength and flexibility.
  2. Create Dropper Loops: Space out dropper loops along the main line, ensuring they are evenly distributed. The loops can be extended to replace the leader lines. 2-3 inches should be enough to connect the hook and have the bait hanging from the main line. Adjust the loop height:
    • Measure 6-8 inches from the bottom weight loop
    • Give yourself some slack in the line in order to compensate for the loop’s length and the tie knot.
    • Make the bottom hook loop.
    • Measure 6-8 inches above the bottom hook loop and proceed to make your top hook loop.
    • After completing the top hook loop, measure another 4-5 inches and proceed to attach your line to swivel which will connect your rig to your main fishing rod line.
  3. Attach Leader Lines: This step is optional. Secure leader lines to the dropper loops, making sure they are of the desired length. Some target species can cut through monofilament lines with their sharp teeth. In those cases, some anglers attach wire lead lines that are very strong and can withstand bite from ferocious species like bluefish.
  4. Add Hooks: Attach hooks to the end of each leader line, ensuring they are secure and won't easily come undone.

Conclusion: Mastering the Hi-Lo fishing rig opens up a world of possibilities for anglers seeking versatility and increased chances of success. Whether you're casting from the shore or drifting in open water, the Hi-Lo rig proves to be a reliable companion for any fishing adventure. Experiment with different bait, adjust leader lengths, and hone your skills with this effective rig to elevate your fishing game to new heights. Happy fishing!
